SEO - The Basics - Choosing a Domain Name. Print E-mail
By Joshua Penman

I know, you may already have one and if you're reading this, you certainly have a business concept or something of that nature you require a website for and of course high rankings in the search engines such as Google, yahoo, msn or bing.

Remember, the keywords are critical in every aspect of SEO.

I'll provide you with two examples: The wrong way to approach SEO and domain names and the right way to choose a domain name for proper search engine optimization.

An example of the wrong domain name for a website. Lets assume we are selling Candy. We were a wholesale Lollipop company at one point our business was 80 percent lollipops. We had a big seller so we named our site after the designer of the lollipop: www.danslicroricepop.com. Now that may have worked, but times have changed now we're doing more diverse candy sales.

Here is the solution: WholesaleCandyStore.com sounds nice doesn't it?

You see it is just about that simple: Get the domain name with the keywords of your product, service, concept who you are, what you do and so forth and so on IN The Domain Name. Period.

The .com and .net extensions seem to be preferred in the search engines though others can optimize, just that if you are looking for top 10 Google Rankings, you may have a easier time with SEO with the .com or .net extensions.
In addition, proper steps need to be taken to find out what keywords your clients, customers, potential clients, customers and so forth are entering in the search engines to find you.

There are many tools, but often times the obvious seems to work best. I like to use forwarding with other domain names with the additional keywords in them as well.

A good example here is www.SeattleNetworkService.com is a company that does computer networking in Seattle Washington. If you Google 'Seattle Network Service' or 'Network Service Seattle' you'll find them coming up in top 5 every time.

The domain name is not the end of Search Engine Marketing, but it is the foundation.
If you do not start out with a proper keyword driven domain name you are going to have a lot of work ahead of you to say, be a monster, yahoo, or drudge report.

That is all for now, more to come on achieving Top 10 Google Rankings and Search Engine Optimization in later articles.
